Vdara was the first hotel to open at CityCenter. I was fortunate to be one of the first members of the media in to tour the hotel when it debuted on December 1. This hotel is quieter than Aria, the larger, more splashy and opulent gaming sister hotel to Vdara, which has no casino and a no-smoking policy. All of Vdara’s rooms are suites; I was quite taken with the spa, which seemed to be extremely tranquil.

If you start to feeling the hotel is too quiet you can always use the walkway to get to the Bellagio, and Aria, of course, is right next door. Just a little further away is the Mandarin Oriental, which opened at CityCenter, just days after Vdara (I was there, here’s my post).

Las Vegas is about to see the opening of three new luxury hotels in December when the massive CityCenter debuts. Aria, which opens December 16, is the largest and most avant-garde. It will be the only three with a casino. Vdara, opening December 1, is the simplest. Built as a condo hotel, it will be a quiet, luxurious option for those who want a kitchen setup, close to all the excitement of the Las Vegas Strip. Mandarin Oriental will be the smallest of the three. Opening December 4, it marks the posh brand’s debut in Las Vegas.

You may have seen the recent Rachel Zoe Project episode where Rachel goes to Paris for Fashion Week with her husband and with Brad, one of her dedicated assistants. I thought the show was actually pretty exciting; after all, there was just tons of footage of the city and even more of the fashion shows that she attended. Her visit to Coco Chanel’s apartment was also a real insider’s look at one of Paris’ most influential fashion designers.

Of course, Rachel’s real life did creep into the episode, this is reality TV after all, when one of her clients back in Los Angeles had a crisis of some sort that involved what clothing they would wear to a VIP event. Rachel and Brad had to pretty much stop what they were doing to tend to the problem.

Rachel is already being criticized on websites for her meltdown during this particular event; naysayers are mumbling that she’s in a $1,500 a night suite at the George V in a cushy bathrobe, surrounded by assistants, claiming she can’t breathe because she’s so stressed. Well, we thought it was a stressful problem she was enduring and we were feeling pretty bad for her at that moment and so we thought how cool it would have been if she had actually wandered down the Spa at the George V; we’ve found that always helps us in a crisis.

New Tuscany villa hotel

By Ruthanne Terrero

Are you ready for a new Tuscan villa hotel experience that comes with a pampering spa and a dining provided by Chef Gordon Ramsay?

Castel Monastero in the small medieval village of Monastero d’Ombrone in Chianti, has just opened. It’s just 14 miles east of Siena, set atop a hill, of course, as all good villa hotels should be. But that’s just me. The property is a member of Preferred Hotels & Resorts, which means it’s passed a number of arduous tests to be accepted. That’s a good thing.

What’s cool about Castel Monastero, aside from the fact that it’s set in an 11th-century village, is that its 76 guestrooms and suites are actually spread out among 13 buildings. Local artisans were employed to provide antiques and light fixtures from the area, as well as wall frescos and stone floors. Sounds nice.

Something else: It also has a 10,000-square-foot, 10-room spa, so it’s unlikely you’ll have to wait for an appointment. “Urban Retreat” is actually housed in two buildings connected by a glass tunnel, which sounds sort of charming. There are also three outdoor swimming pools that will let you get your “Under the Tuscan Sun” groove on. Another nice touch: Couples can book their own spa suite.

We can’t stop fantasizing about having a pampering spa treatment in a gazebo in a flowering garden on a private peninsula overlooking the French Riviera, especially now that we’ve read about Cap Estel in Eze, which indeed has all of those attributes and then some.

The historic hotel (it was opened by Frank Harris, the Irish journalist and novelist in 1900), has just added four new rooms to its offerings, located in the main house. We think their best features are not their interiors, which promise to be uber-luxe, but their private terraces overlooking the Mediterranean. But that’s just us.
If one of the new rooms isn’t available, settle for one of the 14 existing suites that reside in four separate villas throughout the hotel’s grounds. These all have swell French nicknames, such as “le Cap”, “la Mer”, “la Corniche”, “Le Parc”. Those alone make us want to get on a plane and fly to France but we’re also enamored of the fact that they also have their own entrances and security. To which we say, “tres chic.”

Terranea Resort
opened June 12, 20 miles south of Los Angeles in Palos Verdes. The entire property seems amazing, since it’s right on the grand old California coastline but we’re most excited about the oceanfront Spa at Terranea, whose theme is all about wellness.

photo-1

The views here are dazzling, especially from the second story oceanfront co-ed lounge, which has a walkout balcony that gives the illusion of being positioned directly over the ocean. Back inside, there’s a fireplace in case the gentle ocean breezes are just too much.

This is no small facility; the spa itself is 25,000 square feet in size, with a cool 24 treatment rooms and three VIP suites. Men and women have their own indoor/outdoor lounge areas, and that’s not all, there’s an oceanfront pool, 5,000 square foot Fitness and Wellness Center, full-service salon and a Spa Cafe.
