I saw this pile of poor Christmas trees on the way to work today. Apparently, this apartment building has an official day for getting rid of shrubbery, as well as all of the other Christmas/holiday garbage that accumulates during the season.

When I first saw all of these trees en masse, I stopped abruptly. It struck me as sort of a morbid scene. Tree corpses cast out onto the sidewalk.
But the closer I got I realized how lovely these trees still were. The pine scent was still so fragrant. It was like being in a forest…sort of, except all of the trees were lying down. Some still had their decorations on them. I started to dig to see if I could salvage some but then I realized I was late to work…and that I had enough Christmas stuff at home, and so I was on my way. I am hoping they do something good with these trees, recycle them somehow…they really were beautiful and they must have been glorious inside these New York apartments.

You know, my grandparents used to play a yearly joke on their friends, the Coins. They would put an ad in the classifieds saying, “Old Christmas Trees Wanted: $1″ and include their friends’ phone number. The Coins would get hundreds of calls and never know why. This went on for years. I am now wondering why my grandparents were able to do this year after year without their friends catching on.
